Pride & Predator
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (July, 1997)
Author: Sally S. Wright
Average review score:

Very very good!
Some of the best new mystery fiction coming out today. I'm glad to see the adventures of Ben Reese moving forward--unlike most other modern 'mysteries,' this series doesn't rely on blood and guts or sex between the characters to keep the novel moving along--the mystery is the point of the book, and mystery is what you get. The plot is well thought out, and the clues well placed.

Sally does it again
She informed me and delighted me again!

Intriguing plot and characters. A fine setting. And a decent mystery to boot!

I had never thought of Scotland as a possible travel destination. Maybe after her depiction I might consider it. Not that she romanticizes it, she obviously just loves it because it is lovable. Plus there were so many amusing and beguiling Scots that I had the pleasure of meeting. Not to mention the depths of the human heart that I had to ponder when reading this (I thought I knew who the murderer was, but I really didn't want to believe it was who I thought it was--so I had to ponder my own heart's depth as well).

I rarely reread mysteries, but I will return to this one again sometime. There's more to this than I could get on one time through.

A surreal atmospheric mystery
In 1961, Jonathan MacLean is a minister in the Scottish Church. He is happily married to the woman he loves and owns the ancestral estate Kilgarth. His best friend, Lord Alexander Chisholm, owns Balnagard Castle. The two buddies plan to take their annual trip together, which consists of roaming the countryside wherever their instincts lead them to travel. However, Jonathan dies from anaphylaxis reaction to bee venom.

Alex believes that someone deliberately murdered his friend as the bees were found inside Jonathan's picnic basket. Alex is happy that another friend, intelligence officer Ben Reese is coming to Balnagard to appraise his heirlooms. When Ben arrives, he agrees to investigate Jonathan's death. Ben soon finds several viable suspects, but never anticipated that the killer might want to make him the next victim.

Although the story line occurs less than four decades ago, there remains a surreal atmosphere, as if the events occurred in a previous century. The plot is compelling as PRIDE AND PREDATOR focuses on a monster wearing the respectable mask of sane civility that fools everyone except the likable hero. Sally Wright has the right stuff as she shows her story telling abilities to turn a mid-twentieth century who-done-it into a grand novel.

The Firebrand (Highland Treasure Trilogy)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Onyx Books (07 November, 2000)
Author: May McGoldrick
Average review score:

Best of the three
This is the best of the trilogy. There are a few gaps in the story and a few issues left unresolved, such as Gilly. He started out being an important part of the story and just sort of drifted out of the story line. The end of the story is also rather abrupt in light of having to read through three books to get to it. It is almost as if the authors were burned out of ideas. Despite these little gaps and despite the stretch my immagination,it was an enjoyable read. I feel it could be read as a single self contained book as it covers the entire trilogy background of the plot and characters. I recommend it as excellent entertainment.

A good series comes to a graceful enter
In 1535, following the King murdering their father, their mother Nicola Perry exiles her three daughters to different remote parts of Scotland for their safety. Catherine goes to Balvenie where she married her host John Stewart (see THE DREAMER). Laura travels to St. Duthac where she weds her protector William Ross (see THE ENCHANTRESS). The wildest one Adrianne drives the Abbess of Barra in the Western Isles crazy with her defiance.

Eventually, Wyntoun MacLean, master of the Isle, arrives and takes Adrianne away with him when he leaves. His seemingly altruistic motive disguises his effort to obtain the Treasure of Tiberius for the Knights of the Veil. At his father's castle, Adrianne and Wyntoun agree to marry in order to rescue her mother, now held hostage, and to attain the treasure without jeopardizing her now married and pregnant siblings. As they work together, Wyntoun and Adrianne fall in love, but any meaningful relationship remains in jeopardy from a traitor and the individual who abducted her mother.

THE FIREBRAND, the conclusion to the Perry siblings Highland trilogy, is an exiting, well-written historical romance filled with suspense and intrigue. The story line is fun as the lead charcaters struggle with an unknown enemy and their growing love for one another. The return of the stars from the previous tales adds to the overall pleasure of the plot. Though the story line requires some acceptance by the audience, May McGoldrick attains her third gold medal with this triumphant novel.

The Highland Bagpipe and Its Music
Published in Paperback by Birlinn Ltd (October, 2002)
Author: Roderick D. Cannon
Average review score:

For pipers, this is a must!
One of the best comprehensive examinations of the Highland pipes out there! Historical information is clear and unusually accurate, avoiding romance. Covers the development of the GHB and its attendant uses and traditions from its earliest appearances through the present day; truly an impressive work. Cannon's scholarship is unassailable.

This is a wonderful resource.
This is a comprehensive work that covers the history of the GHB, dance tune as well as military traditions, pibroch, and construction. This is a wonderful resource for pipers and anybody with an interst in the pipes; it is a thorough discussion of the GHB's history and music. And my fellow piping students will appreciate its discussion about practice chanters and tutoring methods throughout the ages. Incidentally, there is a fair amount of information on other pipes.

This was really fun!
I love a romance about a strong woman who when faced with a problem, jumps in and takes charge. Mauldie does just that and more. The struggle they both go through with their feelings reads very real and by the end I felt I knew these people. The other characters added a wonderful dimension to the story and I couldn't wait to read the next two in the series.

A GOOD READ
The hero (Balfour) and heroine (Mauldie) are enemies -- yet the hero doesn't realize this right away -- he believes he's found a nursemaid (of course she's a stunning beauty and on a secret mission for vengence) for his battle wounded brother (Nigel)...

Mauldie soon realizes who the handsome warrior is...but decides to hide her identity as he's the one she'd swore vengence against. She grudgingly nurses his brother, while all the time warding off seductive advances from Balfour...

Through a series of dangerous events and intrigue, the prideful couple realizes their strong love for one another -- but are stilled separated by deceit and misunderstandings...

Mauldie & Balfour seems well matched, strong characters and this story ends beautifully. I would recommend this title.

A Highland Pace
This novel was an excellent read! The intense action and passion kept me turning the pages well into the early morning hours! Roderic is charming, arrogant, kind, gentle, quick-witted, and passionate! Flanna is strong, passionate, uncertain, and beautiful! The characters are delightful and unforgettable! This novel by Lois Greiman is an absoluate must if you love historical romance with intelligent characters and a wonderful plot!

one of the best romance novels ever!
Highland Flame is without a doubt one of the best romance novels ever written. It is fast-paced, yet the beauty of the dialogue left me breathless, and wanting to visit the Highlands myself. The witty exchanges also left me laughing out loud. This is one book which will appeal to all who enjoy romance and wit all rolled in one. I for one am looking forward to getting my hands on the next book by lois greiman, and it will not be a moment too soon.

This was as good as the first in the series
Having read all four of the "Highland" series, this and the first stand out as the best. When reading a series, it's often easy to mix characters up from one book to the next because they are usually so similar but I found Nigel and Gisele unique and interesting. I liked the coming home scenes because it allows the characters to not take themselves too seriously.

I LOVED THE HEROINE!
I liked the book and thought that it was very exciting and very sweet how the hero is so understanding. I have to admit that I was not looking so forward to reading this book because my Mom picked it out for me. Lately she had picked up some bad ones. Just to let you know you do get mad at him a little tward the end for not telling her something, but its not something you can 't handle. Have fun with this read I know that I did.

Highland River (Canongate Classics, No 37)
Published in Paperback by Canongate Pub Ltd (March, 1995)
Author: Neil Miller Gunn
Average review score:

One of Scotland's Finest..
As an analogy for life, you can't get any more meaningful than Highland River. A story of a young boy's maturation, told in the brutally honest and realistic context of life in the Highlands of Scotland, before the First World War. His life is intertwined with that of the battle of the salmon, both for survival and to achieve it's mysterious returning to its birthplace. Both are searching for the river's source.

Gunn's writing is breathtaking in its ability to articulate the most intangible of emotions, and there are passages in the book which will stay with me for the rest of my life. Gunn's understanding of the Highland psyche, and his ability to translate it into the most moving prose, is never better exemplified than in this book.

A MASTERPIECE
Neil Gunn's prose in this work is pure perfection. His description of life in the Northern Highlands is passionate, beautiful and refreshingly honest. A complex coming-of-age story that becomes a study of the connections between the working class and the land they live and die on. Gunn is one of Scotland's greatest writers. Contains some absolutely brilliant descriptions of Scotland's natural beauty. If you are interested in great fiction look no further, especially if you have an interest in Scotland. Highly recommended.

Highland Songs of the Forty-Five (Scottish Gaelic Texts ; V. 15)
Published in Hardcover by Scottish Academic Pr (April, 1984)
Author: John Lorne Campbell
Average review score:

The Horse's Mouth
An excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the beliefs and values of Highlanders. The book is a collection of songs in Gaelic with good translations and some tunes. There are historical notes and a short biography for each poet. The songs, all contempory, deal with the Rebellion of 1745; the songs of Alexander MacDonald in particular show the progress of rebellion; his early poems were meant to stir up support for the rising and the later ones to keep up the courage of those involved. There are songs in praise of the tartan plaid, of the Highland clans and 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. A great book for the serious academic as well as the romance novelist or Celtic musician.

The best and only work of its type!
a Charadean (Friends); For those with the Gaelic, native speakers or learners, or those merely interested in Gaelic music and history, this book serves as a wealth of information. Not only did the late, great Dr. Campbell put forth a magnificent volume of poetry, but an extremely important and generally overlooked primary source for those interested in the Jacobite period in general and the '45 in particular. For only here can be found the ideas and beliefs of the most important people in the Jacobite struggle - the Gaelic people themselves. Regardless of one's political viewpoint, it must be recognized that it is what the contemporary Gaels themselves thought and felt that is central to an understanding of why these people rose not once, but four times in sixty years, in an effort to restore the dynasty they viewed as the only rightful heirs to the throne. In these days of "debunking" historical revisionism, much of it generated by Whig (and latterly) Marxist/Leveller agendas, it is both interesting and important to see what the Loyal Clans of the Great Glen felt about the Cause.
